INSOOK HWANG / Alternative space by Artspace, CWOS (City-Wide Open Studios) 2011

Work description

For this show, I present three different projects that I have been developing over the year.

Techniques of lenticuar prints, stencil, airbrushing, digital cut (for the stickers), sticker making, photography, animation, painting, drawing, sewing and collage were applied. Materials used are mylar, glitter film, sign film, printed paper, Swarowski crystals, canvas, digital photo frame, acrylics and ink.

O Sole Mio (oh my sun!), 16x8.8feet

A wall installation made up of four canvases (36x36 inches each) put together with light pink dots that appear to radiate from it. For this, I applied stickers of my own making directly on to the wall morphing the flat surface into an extended virtual space, creating an atmosphere for the abstract form on the canvases at the center. In the lenticulars, the word love is written in different languages (including Korean, English, French and German) that overlap each other in patterns like hidden codes. The globe or flower like form composed of accumulated rectangular shapes (monitors) symbolizes the sun in the system of my art, the source of light giving off bright warm energy with the pink dots symbolizing the energy from that sun.

Matrix of Memories, Oct 2011, 13x 8.8feet

This is a wall installation that combines a geometric black line drawing with an animation. The image of the net like structure symbolize the accumulated memories, experience and the unconsciousness of human beings that lasts forever, shifting their forms and evolving themselves in the space.. Four portraits of myself are combined to make abstract crosses that take the form of stars, in stickers as well as part of the animation, that are spread out, moving as to humorously suggest that I am a free being that can be anywhere and everywhere beyond the limits of time and space. Stickers of different tones and textures were used to create an optical illusion of depth in the wall space.

The Unknown Forest / All You Need is Love, 12.4x8.8feet

Two separate organic forms composed of monitor shapes grown out of imaginary plant like abstract shapes. These images came from my imagination of human beings as organic machines that can grow themselves but that can never be free from feelings and emotions.

For the rice paper drawing, a collage of monitor shapes with lenticulars inlay hang separately in front of the rice paper instead of attached to it for a floating effect while reducing the weight upon the rice paper. The heart images are composed of dots that symbolize digital messages sent off in to the space for the people who are far away from each other.
